Family Room & Dining Room
The retired couple who owns this home is anything but retiring. Their love of family, friends, entertaining and travel keep them very active.
They envisioned a home that reflect their enthusiasm for life, and love for traditional and contemporary styles.
Existing oak hardwood floors in the family room and dining room area were sanded and stained a rich dark brown.
The inspiration for the family room selections was a wool rug from India featuring a pallet of chocolate brown, ivory, and soft yellow.
A velvet brown sofa anchors the large room. Additional seating in the form of two club chairs and two vintage French chairs provide a warm, comfortable space for conversation and relaxation by the fireplace.
The club chairs were covered in a spirited animal print fabric and complemented with decorative pillows made from velvet men’s suiting material.
The vintage French chairs were upholstered in a chevron pattern chenille fabric for a fresh, new look.
Modern glass and brass cylindrical lamps on mirror top end tables flank the sofa, providing warm lighting while keeping the visual space open.
A buffet book case painted with a soft yellow glaze showcases a few of the couple’s travel collections and family mementos. The rich, warm look of this piece was enhanced with the application of faux leather to the back and shelf surfaces.
The fireplace was outfitted with new sleek black glass doors, which mimic the look of the flat screen television above the mantel. This pairing of shape, size, and finish blends the television into the space so it is not so imposing.
Custom brown toned linen draperies with leading edge embroidered tape trimming detail give a casual but classically tailored masculine look.
In the bar area custom wood cabinetry provides storage for entertaining items, and conceals a built-in refrigeration unit.
Modern black metal sconces with paper shades are combined with a vintage mirror for a formal, yet fresh and young appearance.
A custom bound waffle textured wool area rug provides comfort under foot, and leaves the beautiful stained hardwood floors visible around the perimeter of the room.
A large black iron chandelier with gold washed leaf accents is completed with custom silk shades. It highlights the architectural detail of the high tray ceiling while filling the void to give the room warmth. The primitive fixture, in juxtaposition with this somewhat formal space, makes it feel approachable.
The mahogany table’s clean lines update the space. Velvet upholstered dining chairs with nail head trim ensure a comfortable dining experience.
The walls are covered with sophisticated gold, beige, and silver wallpaper, featuring a Jacobean floral design which appears tailored and masculine.
Custom linen draperies and matching valance, feature inverted pleats, embroidered tape trimming and onion ball fringe, lending interest and understated elegance. Sheers behind the draperies provide privacy, and complete look.
